Jesus and Mermaids

We welcome Melanie Ahmetspahic as our speaker today.

Jesis and Mermaids.  How Christian mythical figures can teach us about the invention of race and embracing dualities within ourselves and our communities. One  of Western Christianitiy’s many creations is race.  This Sunday, I will explain the role Christianity played in shaping the Western view of the Body.  I wil also talk about surprising history of the mermaid in Christianity, and how taking a close look at stories about mermaids and Jesus can help us break down ideologies that elevate certain identities  above others.  We will talk about embracing duality within ourselves and our community.

Sunday November 10, 2024 – 11:00 AM

U. S. History with Veterans: On November 10th UUFA will revive a tradition by holding its first post-pandemic Sunday Potluck.  The Executive Committee hopes to hold potlucks at least quarterly as we get back to the routine of monthly potlucks.

Before the meal, Jessie Roberson will talk about the history of formally recognizing veterans.  So if you are free, bring a dish to share.

POTLUCK following service. Please bring a dish to share and label it with ingredients for special dietary needs within our community .

A House for Awakening; Not a Caravan of Despair

This is one of those times when many are questioning the words of Martin Luther King, Jr, who famously said, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” This week, we will explore the importance of agency, wisdom, and courage on the part of those who are seeking to promote a society that embodies Unitarian Universalism’s core values: Love, Justice, Equity, Transcendence, Pluralism, Interdependence, and Generosity.

Pete Mather will be offering the message, and will be joined by Wendy McVicker, the former Poet Laureate of Athens, Ohio.

UUFA Executive Board Updates:  submitted by Marilyn Zwayer

In attendance (by Zoom) for the October 12 board meeting were: Richard Thieret (president), Pete Mather (president-elect), Susan Westenbarger (Treasurer), Roberta Roberson, Jessie Roberson, Andy Ray, Barb Harrison and Marilyn Zwayer (Recorder).
We have finished the first quarter of the fiscal year.  Hopefully our high building maintenance costs are finished for now.  We may need a new roof next year.  Also the parking lot needs attention.
Roberta is sewing a curtain to put behind the upstairs railing, to conceal all the “stuff” up there. Barb will keep checking at ReStore for a piece of glass to cover and protect the pulpit.  It would cost $400 new.
Relief fund monies collected at 2 services totals ~$350.  It was agreed that we should bump that amount up to $500 and send to the UUA Relief Fund.  In keeping with having a greater ministerial presence at the Fellowship, we have 4 dates settled on for retired UU minister Rev. Hilary Krivchenia to preach:
12/24/24; 1/19/25; 4/6/25; 6/8/25.
We’ll need to move more money into the Guest in the Pulpit category. We have a good number of users of our building (Zumba, several singing groups, several dancing groups, AA, book club…).   There is still space and time for more, if anyone knows of a group wanting a place to meet.
The tech committee (Andy, Roberta, Barb and Pat G.) research what projector to buy to replace our old one.  They will also look into the designing and printing of a UUFA tee shirt that we could wear when representing the Fellowship in community events, such as the Honey for the Heart parade on 12/26, or anytime!
The Membership Committee is meeting in November to begin planning events and activites for members and friends.  This is much needed but we haven’t had the time or people to do it till now.  If you are interested please contact Barb Harrison .
We continue to work on becoming ADA compliant.  Barb has contacted the UUA Great Lakes group.  We need to complete a self-assessment first and then they will sent a consultant to us.
Our next meeting will be on Nov. 9 at 10:30am.   we meet via Zoom . If you would like to join please let Richard Thieret know and he can provide the Zoom link.
UUFA Person of the Month
This month we celebrate Fred Snell – Fred works behind the scenes voluntarily organizing and carrying out building repairs, often thinking into the future as to what the building will need later on.
