Sea Change, Not Slow Change: Transforming Culture in Spiritual and Public Life

Sea Change, Not Slow Change: Transforming Culture in Spiritual and Public Life  Sunday, January 23rd, 11am

EXCLUSIVELY BY ZOOM, due to parking lot with 8″ of snow and more coming.

Join us as we explore the highlights and themes from the Fall 2021 issue of the UU World. UU World is the magazine of the Unitarian Universalist Association, celebrating liberal religion and the people it inspires. Led by Katie.

Quick Zoom link:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82365397153

The issue can be read online here: https://www.uuworld.org/issues/fall-2021

Because our parking lot is still full of snow and more snow is forecast for Sunday evening, we’ll be exclusively on Zoom again, unfortunately, which is probably a good decision because Athens County’s active COVID-19 case numbers have never been higher…just with known cases, 4.9% of our county’s population is currently in the “active case” category.

The Complete Zoom invitation is far below, especially for those who wish to log in by telephone.

NEWS from Ohio UU Justice Committee:

Connecting the Dots: Women’s Health & Environmental Justice

Appalachian women are being forced to carry an unreasonable and dangerous burden for the environmental recklessness of oil and gas producing businesses, legal regulators, and legislators. Pollutants from the fracking industry affect women in unique and serious ways. Current State and Federal regulations designed to protect the public from environmental harm are either ineffective or not enforced.

Join Dr. Peggy Ann Berry, PhD, RN, COHN-S, CLE, PLNC, FAAOHN on Sunday, January 23, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time to learn about the health risks to Appalachian women that are being ignored by regional leaders charged with protecting and preserving women’s health. Dr. Berry has been a leader in identifying and providing solutions for women in Appalachia who are in the crossfire of business driven pollution, and Appalachia’s dirty economic reality.

UUFA Plagues and Piety by Richard Thieret

Plagues and Piety: How our Distant Ancestors Reacted to Widespread Disease
Sunday, January 16th, 11am
EXCLUSIVELY BY ZOOM, this time due to incoming snowstorm.

Throughout recorded history, spiritual people have reacted to diseases and plagues by blaming sinners, inventing gods and goddesses, and pleading with them for better times. Come hear and see the results of Richard Thieret’s recent research into our distant ancestors’ religious practices in times of plagues. Be prepared to join in the fun.

By Richard Thieret, who has updated this popular presentation he first shared in September 2020.

NOTE: Sunday,  January 16, 2022, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens will once again be exclusively by Zoom at 11am, this time due primarily to the snowstorm forecasted by some to begin an hour before our service. https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82365397153

The Complete Zoom invitation is far below, especially for those who wish to log in by telephone, but because this will presentation will include a lot of slides, a video link is recommended.

Stories of “Good” Failures

Stories of “Good” Failures
Sunday, January 9th

We invite you to come and share a story of a failure, that in retrospect was a blessing. Many of us struggle with the idea that failure is ok, so please join us for story time.

Same Old New Year, Sunday 11am Zoom Service

We look forward to virtually seeing you and planning together. Led by Brian Richards.

ZOOM Solstice Service: On Darkness

ZOOM Solstice Service: On Darkness

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will be meeting by Zoom this Sunday, December 19, 2021, at 11am:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82365397153

To start off our service, Brian Richards’ two daughters, now ages 6 and 7, will read to us. After their readings, we’ll read a short article on page 12 in the Fall 2021 UU World magazine, titled “”A Theology of Darkness” by Rev. Kristen L. Harper, and we’ll consider her discussion questions and exercises as a possible way to reframe our understanding of the darkness of winter and its solstice. We’ll end our service with music, and with sharing our intentions for the coming months of darkness, as well as sharing our requests for help to make those intentions a reality.

Rev. Harper’s article is also available here for your viewing ahead of the service or during the service as you wish: https://www.uuworld.org/articles/theology-darkness

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

No UUFA Service July 4th

PROGRAMMING

Just a Reminder that we are not having a Sunday service this weekend. Enjoy any and all celebrations you observe for Independence Day! And also read Frederick Douglass’s powerful speech “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro” (https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/part4/4h2927t.html.) Nearly all American holidays carry mixed messages when we shine a light on history.

The Programming Committee is making plans for future summer services. Once we start assigning topics and activities to specific dates, we’ll be back with details. So watch this space.

As a reminder, we’re offering two services or activities per month for July and August. We will reconvene on September 12 for the In-Gathering Service.

If you have any comments or ideas for the Programming team, please get in touch! suusanw.uu@gmail.com

THE UUFA BOARD’S NEXT MEETING will be Saturday, July 10th at 10:30am. All members are invited to attend.

UUFA goes on VACAY! (That’s “vacation,” y’all!)
We are taking a break for the summer from our traditional Sunday morning service schedule. Watch this space (the Greensheet newsletter) for details about summer Programming plans–we might have an informal Zoom discussion in our usual 11:00 AM Sunday time slot, we might plan a nature hike or outdoor gathering in our grove. The Programming committee is committed to providing at least two activities per month (July through August.)
We will reconvene for our In-Gathering Service on Sunday, September 12, at 11:00 AM in the Fellowship building and online via Zoom.

If you have any comments or ideas for the Programming team, please get in touch! suusanw.uu@gmail.com

$$ REPORT FROM THE UUFA TREASURER $$
The Fellowship’s new fiscal year begins July 1, 2021. As you know this pandemic year has presented challenges to our usual operations and, by extension, to our finances. We’re doing OK–not wealthy by any means, but OK. Many thanks to those who have made pledges for the new year! This upfront commitment from you makes it possible for us to plan for the coming year and beyond. We still have an aging building to deal with, but our energy for living our Unitarian Universalist values in the world continues to be refreshed!
If you have questions about our budget, please let me know! suusanw.uu@gmail.com

THE UUFA BOARD’S NEXT MEETING will be Saturday, July 10th at 10:30am. All members are invited to attend.

PROGRAM IDEAS?

The UUFA Programming Committee seeks your ideas of programs for our Sunday mornings. Would you like to present during one of our Sundays?  Would you like to share music or readings?  Can you recommend a good speaker?

The committee will meet by email during the summer. Contact Katie, Susan, or Brian for information during the summer.  Ideas most welcome. Check our website or Facebook page for the latest information.

HOW TO SUBMIT ITEMS FOR THIS GREENSHEET NEWSLETTER DURING THE SUMMER OF 2021:  Until further notice, please email items to barbunday@gmail.com and put “Greensheet” in the subject line. New ideas, new columns, announcements, artwork, photographs, biographies, birthdays, anniversaries, and whatnot that you don’t mind being public are all welcome for possible inclusion in the Greensheet. Deadline for each week: Midnight Wednesday or before publication, whichever comes last. Thanks!
