Community Event: Annual River Sweep

On June 18th the Athens Soil and Water Conservation District is joining the Ohio River Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO) in participating in the 27th Annual River Sweep, a multi–state river cleanup event.  Our efforts will concentrate on the Hocking River as it flows through the city of Athens.   The local effort will cover about 4 miles of the Hocking River from the West Union Street Bridge to the Lowes Home Improvement Store. Check-in is 9:00am to 9:30am at the Athens Community Center East Parking Lot and trash pick-up will occur from 9:30am and 11:30am. The first one hundred people to volunteer for the Hocking River pick-up will receive a 2016 River Sweep T-Shirt. Thanks to our local sponsors all participants will be served lunch after the pick-up. Trash bags are provided and gloves will be issued to each volunteer. Youth are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.  All those interested in volunteering for this event please visit the website www.AthensSWCD.org to register or for more information.

UUA General Assembly, Columbus, OH June 22-26, 2016

The theme for GA 2016 will be Heart Land: Where Faiths Connect. The faith world is increasingly multifaith. People are crossing borders of religion and spiritual practice to create wholeness in their lives individually and collectively. The labels—Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, theist and non-theist—no longer define who or what we love, or how spirit moves in our lives. General Assembly 2016 in Columbus Ohio will assemble leaders and communities of many faiths to worship together, learn from one another, and create a new vision of faith that no longer divides us, but connects us to an interdependent future that works for all. For more information, see the webpage: http://www.uua.org/ga.

General Assembly Sunday Worship at 10:30am is free and open to the public, and UUFA will not be hosting our own service that morning to encourage our members to experience the GA service in Columbus. Those who are unable to travel to Columbus are encouraged to watch the service live online: http://www.uua.org/ga/off-site/2016/worship/sunday.
