Guest at Your Table

The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC), dedicated to advancing justice and human rights for 75 years, is having its traditional fundraiser (Guest at Your Table), beginning at Thanksgiving, and continuing until Martin Luther King Day in mid January. This season, UUSC is celebrating the 75 years since Martha Sharp of the Unitarian Service Committee sailed from Lisbon with 29 refugee children, many of them Jewish, in December 1940. The faces of two of those refugees, now old folks, are featured on this year’s Guest at Your Table money collecting box.

It is now too late to make a donation for the 2015 tax year, but it is not too late to participate. A donation of $40 makes you a member of UUSC; contributions in any amount are, of course, gratefully received. Checks made out to UUSC may be sent directly to: UUSC, PO Box 808, Newark NJ 07101-0808.

Activist Minister Melvin Hoover to Speak at MLK Week Event

Ohio University’s MLK Week celebration will kick off this year with “Faith Acts,” featuring the Reverend Melvin Hoover, co-minister emeritus of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Charleston, West Virginia.

The topic is race and racism in the age of #BlackLivesMatter, on campus and in the wider community. And Rev. Hoover brings an important voice and history to bear on this issue. In a career in public social justice ministry that stretches from the civil rights movement of the 1960s to the Elk River chemical spill in 2014 and beyond, Hoover was part of a denomination-wide effort to transform the Unitarian Universalist Association into an actively and intentionally anti-racist institution–to put its faith into bold, visionary action as an organization. As our nation and our campus wrestle again with the resurgence of racial tension, Rev. Hoover’s story, and his challenge, could not be more timely.

The event will take place on Saturday, January 16, at 6pm, in the Multipurpose Room of the Multicultural Center on the second floor of Baker University Center. Light refreshments will be offered, and there will be opportunity to engage in conversation with Rev. Hoover and other attendees. For more information or if you have questions, contact Rev. Evan Young at United Campus Ministry (evan@ucmathens.org).

Winter Breakaway Survey

The Winter Breakaway team wishes to thank the UUFA community for a successful 2015 Winter Breakaway and Silent Auction at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens. Over $2000 was raised for the UUFA Endowment fund.

In order to help us make next year’s event even better, the we are asking those who attended to please fill out this quick, completely anonymous survey on Survey Monkey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DK97SZX. If you have any issues with the survey, please feel free to come on Sunday to find a member of the Breakaway Team and we can help you complete the survey after service.

Thanks again and we hope that you had as much fun as we did!
