“Doing Nothing” as Resistance

“Doing Nothing” as Resistance:
a discussion on the concepts in

How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy
by Jenny O’Dell    Sunday 11am EST by Zoom

We’ll ponder the importance of doing nothing. We’ll ponder ways to shift our lives from the “attention economy” to the more-than-human world around us. We’ll ponder subtleties of resistance, starting with Diogenes’ actions of “I will participate, but not as asked, and Bartleby’s “I prefer not to” in lieu of “I refuse.”

We’ll ponder how social media prevents us from honoring the diversity inside each of us, e.g. the right to change our minds and have different identities of ourselves for different audiences, as is a natural part of being human. We’ll ponder environmentally-sustainable alternatives to progress, including escaping laterally towards each other, honoring bioregionalism, and more.

Come find fodder for your New Year’s Resolutions.

Jenny Odell’s book is one of Obama’s favorite books from 2019. “A complex, smart, and ambitious book that at first reads like a self-help manual, then blossoms into a wide-ranging political manifesto.” – New York Times Book Review
