Just Believe Us: Trans Day of Visibility

Family rejection doubles the likelihood of a transgender person attempting suicide (Williams Institute, 2019). On this Trans Day of Visibility, I will discuss my experience supporting peers on the transgender crisis hotline. Through that experience, I’ll talk about the simple power of accepting one another, with or without deep understanding.
Jasper Wirtshafter (he/him/his) grew up in Athens, Ohio and now lives in what he calls the least terrible town in Indiana. After earning a Master of Public Affairs at Indiana University, he worked with Trans Lifeline, a peer support organization for transgender people. You may now find him tracking the spread of COVID-19 with the state of Indiana, planting basil, or ranting about tax policy to his dog.
