Immediate Release: First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta Homecoming Celebrates 157 years

The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Marietta Ohio will be celebrating the historic milestone of 157 years as a congregation with three events from July 29th to the 31st. Kids and their families are invited to join the July 29th (Friday evening) 6 pm Treasure Hunt Adventure. Families should bring their own picnic and table service. Saturday (the 30th )at 2 pm the Marietta community and friends are invited to the unveiling of the Goddess Concretia created by four local artists who enjoy making quirky art together. The Saturday event includes a dessert potluck. Tours of the church’s main sanctuary will be held all three days of the homecoming event.

The Treasure Hunt Adventure will take place in the church’s “Treasure Island” courtyard and includes a scary adventure map. Anyone who wants to play can join the children-led hunt for the parts of the map. Treasure hunters will survive the treasure-hunt-famine by surviving on a special dirt dessert and ants on a log.

If adventuresome families survive the journey by piecing together the ancient pirate map they will have a chance to unearth the long-lost authentic English pirate chest containing a specially selected collection of dragon, dinosaur and cat eggs that will need to be cracked open to discover the contents.

The Concretia unveiling will take place at the church’s courtyard at 2 pm Saturday July 30th after being paraded through downtown Marietta. What began as a tile, concrete and glass series of stepping stones eventually led to a two-year Sunday afternoon project for local artists Elin Jones, Judy Lewis, Nancy Coleman and Ines Allen. The statue will be placed at the First Unitarian Universalist church court yard, a space previously inhabited for thousands of years by indigenous people before 48 New Englanders and Europeans arrived in 1788.

The Sunday (July 31st) regular Sunday service (11am) will include photos of past events over the years, as well as a sharing of inspirational stories by present and past members. Tours of the sanctuary will be conducted at noon, followed by a special coffee hour.

Tours of the church sanctuary, built in the 1850’s by Ohio’s largest land owner and and philanthropist Nahum Ward will be available on Friday July 29th at 6 pm, Saturday (July 30th) at 2 pm and Sunday (July 31st) at noon. For more information or to schedule a tour contact (740) 525-1833.
