UUFA Announcements for December 4, 2017

Good Afternoon UUFA Members and Friends.

  Happy 1st day of Chalica as we celebrate the 1st principle – The inherent worth and dignity of every being   Thank you Patrick for a wonderful introduction to the  UU Holiday of Chalica yesterday during service.  The decorated chalices that everyone in attendance made were lovely and the message of the morning was even more joyful.

Here is what’s happening this week at UUFA:

Choir practice –  Tuesday,  December 5th – 7-8pm – all voices welcome !

Programming / RE Committee Meeting – Thursday, December 7th –  7:00 pm at the fellowship.

Thursday, December 7th at 7pm-  Our next RE meeting is  with the Programming Committee at UUFA. Last summer, the board decided that a joint meeting of the RE and Programming committees should happen once a quarter. The idea is to figure out which Sundays are RE Sundays, and whether, how, and when the children can be incorporated into Sunday mornings with the adults. All are welcome to attend. Please note that this is the Programming Committee’s regular monthly meeting. Consequently, the amount of time allocated to joint business will be limited to the time the Programming Committee has available for that purpose.

UUFA Winterbreakaway –  This Saturday, December 9th – 7:30  – 9:30 pm . Join us for an elegant evening of  live music, good food, good raffle/auction to help with your holiday shopping !    We hope to see many members and friends attending. We have many lovely items that will be auctioned or raffled off. Delicious light appetizers and cash malt beverage bar ! Tickets may be purchased at the door and are $20 adult/ $10 students and children.

Sunday, December 10, 2017 – The last day of Chalica corresponds to Rev. Don Rollins monthly visit to our Fellowship. Please join us to celebrate. Service begins at 11:00 am and coffee/tea is available beginning at 10:30am

On-Going UUFA Announcements:

Guest at Your Table – annual UUSC fundraiser is in motion. Several members have taken boxes for collecting funds during the holidays.Proceeds will benefit the work of the UUSC.  Boxes will be collected Dec. 17th. Social Action Leader/Chair Needed – Do you have an interest in organizing for social justice/action ?  Have a spare few hours per month to coordinate these activities for UUFA?  We are still seeking a chair person to head up our social action efforts for the year. We’ve committed to addressing food insecurity this year and are doing a great job with the monthly collection for Athens Food Panty, the collection box in the entry way as well as the lbs. of donated fresh vegetables to CFI’s donation station.  Please see Pat Gordon if interested !

Nominating Committee News –  As you think of your New Year’s resolutions, please be thinking of serving either on the UUFA Nominating Committee, or on the UUFA Board for 2017-2018. Please contact our President Elect, Wenda Sheard, at 740-818-1845 if you are interested. Here’s the scoop, directly from our by-laws:

“At least two months prior to any election of officers, the Executive Committee shall appoint a Nominating Committee. The duties of the nominating committee shall be to determine, under the advice of the Recorder, what elected offices will be going vacant at the end of the current fiscal year, to solicit nominations from voting UUFA members, and to present the resulting slate to the Executive Committee at least thirty (30) days prior to the election. The Nominating Committee shall consisting of no fewer than three (3) voting members of the UUFA, including the President-Elect, one elected official with a year of term remaining, and one member of the congregation who is not currently serving in any elected position. Members of the Nominating Committee shall not be nominated to any elected position.”

What’s Happening in the Athens Community? 

Mt. Zion Historic Baptist Church on Carpenter St. in Athens is in need of financial support .  They have reached out to the Athens faith community to ask for help in financially supporting an immediate need for roofing and structural repairs to their physical church before winter sets in.  If you can support please contact them by following their website link here:  http://www.mtzionathens.org/home.html

Holiday Concert to Benefit The Athens County Food Pantry – Sunday, December 10th – 4:00 pm – Arts West – 132 West State St., Athens.  This joyful and varied program that is sure to warm your heart, lift your spirits, and put you in the Holiday mood.  Musicians include; Matthew Chester-Griffin- Baritone, Melissa Brobek – Mezzo Sporano, Alexandra Bruno – Mezzo Soprano, Nicholas Nesbitt – Tenor, Michael Weiser- Tenor, Harolyn Brient- Piano, Michael Tobar- Flute & Piano, Asa Roach- Harp – Free Admission – light refreshments will be served during intermission. Money donated will benefit the Athens Co. Food Pantry.

Handel’s Messiah Sing – Athens Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd – Dec. 15 – 6:00 pm- 64 University Terrace, will hold optional rehearsals Nov. 28 and Dec. 5 for anyone interesting in participating in a sing-along concert of Handel’s “Messiah,” to be held at the church on Dec. 15 at 6 p.m. The rehearsals will be held in Ohio University’s School of Music, Glidden Hall, Room 561, from 7 to 8 p.m. both evenings. Participants should arrive by 6:45.

Emergence ; The Sacred Feminine Dances Once More – Coming in February 2018 !- Saturday, February, 17, 2018 –7:00 pm Sunday, February 18, 2018 – 2:00 pm Arts West 132 W. State St, Athens, OH .  Follow one woman’s journey away from the cultural messages that happiness is achieved outside herself through materials things, consuming and through other people. Trapped by feelings of doubt, inadequacy and helplessness, the woman is forced to go within herself to seek solitude and reconnect with her sacredness. She receives many lessons and bears witness to others, both women and men struggling with their personal journeys. The lessons received help her dance her own dance and stand in her own power. UUJO – Climate Action Day at OH Statehouse

On October 12th, I’ll be joined by climate and clean energy activists from around the state to raise our voices to call for climate action and clean energy at the Statehouse.

Now more than ever, Ohio legislators need to hear from you. There are concrete energy efficiency and sustainable energy policies we can promote to fight climate change while bringing clean energy jobs and cleaner air to our state.
Join us for an interfaith day of action and grassroots lobbying on October 12th at the Statehouse in Columbus. RSVP today to let us know you can attend and our partners at the Sierra Club will follow up with updates and training resources.

UUJO Annual Justice Assembly 2017

“Strength for the Journey: Expanding Our Skills, Engaging Our Spirits”​

Resistance!: The Holy No! – Revs. Mel Hoover and Rose Edington

An interactive presentation that draws from the UU awe-inspiring tradition of dissenting towards justice.  We are looking at resistance that leads to the lifting of oppression–that’s why we call it a holy no; we also realize that there are those whose kind of resistance leads to oppression, which we call an unholy no.  The Holy No allows you the space to affirm the worth and dignity of all people.  In the resistance on behalf of “we the people” — all of us– passions often run high.  How do live out our UU values as we pursue equal justice for all?


Speaking from the Heart – Rev. Dr. Susan Ritchie

How to communicate effectively without using notes or scripts.  Participants will learn strategies for powerfully conveying their justice commitments, whether they are visiting a legislator, taking to the media, or speaking to accongregation or other group.


Rebirth and Resistance in this Age of LGBTQ++ –  Samuel Prince

As the assault on LGBTQ++ continue in our era, we need to have a rebirth of what the tools and environment would lend itself to resist and change the narrative of what it means to have justice and equal rights. And whether as the Association, congregation or individual can we say that we are abiding by our Principles for justice, equity and compassion.  ​

​Practical Organizing Skills: Campaigns and Teams –Gary Davenport

Many of us participate in movements for justice, but how can we respond when we are called to be the mover? This session will show how to create a campaign with winnable goals and build teams to achieve them. Come prepared to share your experiences and hopes and take a plan for action with you for yourself and your congregations.

​Family & Friends & Political Differences: Reaching Across Our Divisions – Rev. Joan Van Becelaere

Differing views on social issues and political policies divide many of us from those we love.  Too many of us are afraid to even talk to some of our loved ones for fear of starting heated arguments that are destined to go nowhere. What can we do to bridge this relational divide?  Can we learn to speak to one another again in this age of polarization?  We will draw on the wisdom of comedian Jim Gaffigan, Kid President, a hostage negotiator and each other as we explore ways to approach our divisions and rebuild our relationships.

Commission on Social Witness

The Commission on Social Witness will hold its October video conference call Tuesday, October 17 at 11:00 a.m. EST. Join online or call 1-646-558-8656, meeting ID: 559 774 6972. The agenda will include reviewing the current Congregational Study and Action Issue (CSAI) submissions. The Commission is also hosting a meeting Wednesday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m. EST to gather ideas for ways to do more effective social witness work at General Assembly. This will be a repeat of the meeting held in September. Join online, and for background, check out the slides from GA 2016. GA 2017 slides will be shared in the November meeting. Share your ideas! UUA Disaster Relief Fund

Our UU friends and neighbors in Florida and the Caribbean—including Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands—have experienced extraordinary devastation following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. We invite you to contribute to the UUA Disaster Relief Fund (formerly the Hurricane Irma Recovery Fund) so the UUA can provide financial assistance to UU congregations impacted by these and other natural disasters. In addition to facilitating their own disaster recovery, congregations receiving disaster relief funds will have discretion to provide financial assistance to their members, as well as to support local partner organizations serving the community at large. The Church of the Larger Fellowship (CLF) may apply on behalf of CLF members living in disaster areas. Volunteer to Help Provide Free Medical Services in June

Here is an opportunity to help with an important program to provide essential health services to underserved people in Appalachian Ohio. There’s a significant need for volunteers to help with this program. The attached press release and timeline will provide more information.

They need approx. 300 volunteers June 1-June 10 to pull this off – data entry, patient escorts, kitchen helpers, and supply runners.

The last one of these was in Cumberland, Maryland.  They provided dental, medical, vision and veterinary services for 1,000 people.  Those services were worth $995,000.

February’s Athens County Food Pantry Contributions

The February collection for the Athens County Food Pantry netted $66.00.  This amount will furnish 6 families with food for 3 days.

To date, UUFA has contributed $186.  Thanks to all who contributed this month.  UUFA’s continued support of the Pantry is most appreciated!

Minister’s Report: Don Rollins to preach here in May. He is also interested in becoming an Affiliated Community Minister (discussion re this process to happen at future date after Don preaches at UUFA)

Treasurer’s Report: Many evenings spent setting up books, accounts, procedures, processes. Big thanks to Laura, Michael, Patrick, and Jeremy!

Old Business

Annual business meeting planning underway.

Finance committee to get budgets from committees—by Feb 15th.

All info (budgets, agenda, etc) for the general business meeting needs to be with Roberta by Feb 18th.

New Business

Re bylaws, Paul: motion: board to have meeting with bylaw committee to discuss new bylaws. Seconded Roberta. No opposition.

UUA certification and vote on social justice issue due tomorrow: Laura motion to vote yes on Reproductive Justice issue. Lois seconded. No opposition.

Pat advised we have 50 voting members in the congregation.

Committee Reports

Programming/RE Natalie: Children’s program following SOTSL program. Natalie appreciates having children involved in upstairs Sunday programs. Long term planning underway. Need babysitter for young ones. Natalie to talk with Jessie about Adult RE. Natalie to put together a budget. Paul reports that programming is scheduled through June.

COM/Membership Membership: revisiting game day and considering other non-Sunday service activities.

Facilities/Endowment: Kitchen update underway. Paul motion, Natalie seconded to tour the proposed new kitchen space after meeting. No opposition. Clean up day went well. Patrick talked about budgets and future facilities projects—insulation, doors.

Standing on the Side of Love: Lois advised that $370 raised through Guest At Your Table.
