Why You Should Care: Mental Health and Coping During the Pandemic

“Why You Should Care: Mental Health and Coping During the Pandemic,”  with Dr. Michelle Pride

Sunday Service, June 13, 2021, 11am EST (By Zoom and perhaps also IN-PERSON! Stay tuned….we’ll send out a special edition of the Greensheet if the UUFA Board votes on Saturday morning to open the Fellowship building to in-person services that will also be by Zoom for those who prefer not to attend in person.)

We’re thrilled to have Dr. Michelle Pride speak to us this Sunday on mental health and coping during a pandemic. She’s one of so many mental health professionals who now have a unique window on the pandemic’s effect on our mental health.

Michelle Pride, Ph.D. Michelle received her doctorate from Michigan State University. She is a multicultural/feminist/constructivist therapist who has specialized in working in a university setting. Her interests and expertise include women’s issues, LGBTIQA+ issues, trans affirmative therapy, group therapy, trauma work, and working with student athletes. Michelle was the training director for 8 years and for the last 3 years she has been working on balancing her passions for clinical work, supervision, advocacy, and social justice, and self-care. When she’s not at work, you can find Michelle hiking, kayaking, knitting, gardening, or listening to esoteric podcasts..

UUFA HIKING SUNDAY We had quite a crowd for hiking Sunday! Thanks to all, newbies and longtimers and in-betweens who showed up. Here’s a photo of a few of people who showed up to either hike or sit and visit.  Thanks to Marilyn for taking the photo with all warned in advance that the photo might appear here.

A LAWN MOWING COINCIDENCE
A few weeks ago the two people who voluntarily, through the goodness of their hearts, take care of our fellowship buildings and grounds—Fred at the left of the photo above, and Richard at the right—surprised each other by BOTH showing up with lawnmowers at the same time to mow the fellowship grounds. Thank you, Fred & Richard!

UUFA Hiking Sunday

UUFA HIKING SUNDAY
at Richard Thieret’s Tree Farm
Sunday June 6, 2021, 11am

We’re always happy to change plans when it’s best for the folks involved. This Sunday is no exception. We’ll have delfin bautista join us later this month, and this Sunday will take a break from our regular services and instead have a nature hike led by science teacher Richard Thieret on his tree farm.

We’ll have chairs set up in the orchard for those who prefer to sit and chat instead of hike.

Wear long pants and socks, and bring a face mask in case we have non-vaccinated children or adults among us. Bring a water bottle, too.

Richard and Wenda have more plants and seeds to share, so come with pots filled with soil from the hole where you want to plant a trumpet creeper vine or some herbs or raspberries or a baby tree or other plant you might find in the woods or meadows. Shovels provided.

Address: 13499 Dutch Creek Road, Athens, Ohio. It’s an easy drive, ten minutes from the top of Columbus Road. Go 4.2 miles along State Route 550 towards Amesville, then turn right on Dutch Creek Road and follow that road two more miles. Black mailbox with red tulips on left, driveway on right. Newcomers welcome. Children welcome. Bring friends.

(Photo of Richard hiking last weekend with grandchildren.)

UUFA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FROM SUSAN W. (suusanw.uu@gmail.com ; 240-305-0860)

Following our Annual Meeting in April, the Board is working on addressing our current needs and figuring out how we can retain ministerial support for the coming year. We would love to have some help from other members of our community on specific tasks. Can you help??
KATIE E. & ROBERTA R. are talking to a UU consultant about meeting with the congregation soon to work on a mission statement and a strategic plan that will guide us going forward. We’ll need help contacting UUFA members to ensure we have a big turnout for these meetings. Do you have time to make a few phone calls or send an email to other UUFA members and friends?
JESSIE R. is looking at a new insurance policy that might save us some money in the next few years. Do you know anything about insurance policies? Exciting stuff, I know! But Jessie could use some assistance to compare-and-contrast our current policy with potential new policies in order to make a recommendation to the board.
MARILYN Z. is going to review the committee responsibilities in our UUFA bylaws to see if our organization can be restructured to better fit our current size. If you are interested in seeing our bylaws–they’re really very manageable–and discussing this issue with Marilyn, let us know!
BRIAN R & ANDY R. are looking into how we can evolve to a “hybrid ministry” when we begin meeting in person again in the fall while also providing Zoom access for those still at home.
SUSAN W. would love to have one or two people with some expertise in web development to work on a web site redesign for the Fellowship.
Our next Board meeting will be on Saturday, June 12, at 10:30 AM. Please contact me (Susan: suusanw.uu@gmail.com ; 240-305-0860) if you’d like to assist board members with the tasks described above, or if you’d like to attend the June board meeting.

First responders, teachers, social workers, nurses, aides, activists, counselors and many others require empathy on the job. But being empathetic as part of a daily routine has a dark side: physical and psychological damage from exposure to another human being’s trauma. Join us for an informative chat about how to identify the effects of trauma exposure in yourself and a path toward self-care based on the book Trauma Stewardship by Laura van Dermoot Lipsky and Connie Burk.

“STORIES ABOUT LETTING GO”
by Brian Richards

Sunday Service 11am EST by Zoom
April 25, 2021

It’s a series of stories with a simple through line. Long story short, I’m finding I go around believing reality should be certain ways a lot. I’m also finding when I let go of those certain ideas about how reality should be, that I’m better able to notice more about what is here and appreciate reality more for what it is.  – Brian Richards

“Climate Change: Structural Racism and Environmental Justice”
by Energy Economist, Policy Advocate, and Regulatory Affairs Expert Stacia Harper

Sunday Service 11am EST by Zoom
April 18, 2021

About our Speaker:

Stacia Harper has spent more than two decades working in the energy sector, representing consumer interests, advocating for low income populations, and creating new market opportunities to reduce harmful emissions, increase energy efficiency, and increase participation in renewable energy.

Her unique experiences and varied career have enabled her to lead stakeholder coalitions while working directly with national laboratories, universities, state commissions, PIOs/NGOs, wholesale market operators, deregulated and regulated utilities, and disadvantaged populations. Ms. Harper’s work has led to national collaboration and replication in many states and utility territories.

While with the Ohio Consumers Council, she saved consumers in Ohio over $9 billion over a ten year period, and increased energy efficiency and renewable portfolio standards in the state. She was then recruited by the Ohio Low-income Weatherization Network to lead up regulatory affairs for 60 member-based agencies representing the interests of the economic disadvantaged.

About her Presentation:

The year 2020 has been a watershed year, bringing awareness and dialogue to structural racism and the presence of disparate racial vulnerabilities amplified by climate change in the United States. The murder of George Floyd led rise to the “Black Lives Matter” movement, bringing to the forefront open dialogue, exposing long-term structural racism. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed undeniable disproportionate health vulnerabilities to communities of color, and exposed affluent white populations to the inescapable consequences of climate change, forcing uncertainty to health and financial well-being.

Traditionally, disadvantaged communities are simply referred to as low-income communities, ignoring the fact that the majority of the population in low income areas are black. Structural racism and economic disadvantage have sanctioned the continued siting of dirty chemical/coal plants and toxic waste sites in predominantly low-income, black communities.

Climate change and structural racism are inextricably linked. To address climate change, we must also address the issues of equity and justice. As long as affluent populations in society are able to remain removed from the gross injustices of poor environmental management and escape the consequences of climate change, change will not happen.

The disparate environmental equity, and lack of environmental justice to communities of color has compromised health, education, and economic advancement. The disproportionate exposure to environmental harms and health consequences in black communities, is an issue of environmental equity and justice, that have remained hidden by the forces of structural racism. Paving the path  forward for policy advocates and community members to ensure the environmental justice movement provides equal protection from environmental harms and risks, for all populations, it is imperative that communities of color are involved and represented in the policy making process.

THANK YOU to the UUFA from Pete Wuscher

My heartfelt thanks to the UU Fellowship of Athens for allowing me to keep my promise to my father Hermann Wuscher. We had great weather for a small tree planting and socially distanced ceremony, which even included his daughter in England via Skype. I promised my father Hermann that if I was unable to travel to Europe for his final ceremony there, that I would have some form of ceremony here in the States. So again thanks to my UU friends in Athens, Pete Wuscher.

UU JUSTICE OHIO NEWS:
FAMILIES ARE BACK ON THE BUSES:  SUPPORT  FOR ASYLUM SEEKING FAMILIES SPRING 2021

Under the new Biden administration, asylum seeking families are once again able to travel from the border to be with their family members already living in the United States. The families stay with family members while they await their asylum court hearings. The Cbus Immigrant Transit Assistance group (the bus greeters) and Simakovsky Law are once again meeting families at the bus station and providing basic food, water hygiene items and blankets for families and children who have been traveling for days and days with nothing other than the clothes on their backs.

And the Cincinnati Bus Greeters are up and running again, too, and need your support.

We need donations now to stock up again to meet the needs of these asylum seeking families.  Many of our stores were depleted in recent month as we also took on support for immigrant families already living in Ohio.

Monetary donations for Columbus and Cincinnati can be can be made at:
https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/support-ohio-ita-teams?source=direct_link&

Or send a check and march whether Columbus or Cincinnati to:
UUJO, PO Box 980, Worthington, OH 43085— and note “Immigrant” in the memo line.

If you have any questions, please call Simakovsky Law concerning Columbus at (614) 695-4605 or email Lauren at lauren@simakovskylaw.com. Or contact Rev Joan Van Becelaere with UUJO at info@uujo.org
