“Cherishing All Life” Easter Service

“Cherishing All Life” Easter Service
with the First UU Society of Marietta
and their Rev. Kat Hawbaker via ZOOM

Opening at 10:30am, with Service Beginning at 11am
April 4, 2021

Spring brings breezes of change. While some communities celebrate a specific resurrection story, let us practice cherishing all life, in its many forms and gifts. Our Universalist emphasis on experience recognizes we are all a part of the interdependent web of all existence. Humans are just a part of the whole and holy story of life.

Just Believe Us: Trans Day of Visibility

Just Believe Us: Trans Day of Visibility
by Jasper Wirtshafter
Sunday Service 11am EST by Zoom
March 28, 2021

Family rejection doubles the likelihood of a transgender person attempting suicide (Williams Institute, 2019). On this Trans Day of Visibility, I will discuss my experience supporting peers on the transgender crisis hotline. Through that experience, I’ll talk about the simple power of accepting one another, with or without deep understanding.

Jasper Wirtshafter (he/him/his) grew up in Athens, Ohio and now lives in what he calls the least terrible town in Indiana. After earning a Master of Public Affairs at Indiana University, he worked with Trans Lifeline, a peer support organization for transgender people. You may now find him tracking the spread of COVID-19 with the state of Indiana, planting basil, or ranting about tax policy to his dog.

Celebrating Spring with Our Children, Young & Old

Celebrating Spring with Our Children, Young & Old
Sunday Service 11am  IN-PERSON
In Our UUFA Parking Lot
184 Longview Heights Road
Athens, Ohio 45701
March 21, 2021

Join us for a spring-focused, pandemic-safe parking lot service, including music, activities, and socializing!  Bring a camping chair or folding chair, and one to share with others if you wish. Guests most welcome. Masks required, of course.

We’ll set up three tables in our parking lot for socially distanced activities….one with hymnals for signing; one with pine cones, peanut butter, and bird seeds for making bird feeders (great for children!); and one with garden seeds for your garden (available by donation to the fellowship).

And the best part of Sunday: If you bring a bucket of soil from a hole you’ve dug on your property, we’ll send you home with a baby tree from the fellowship’s mother sweet gum tree.  Imagine that!  Having a piece of the fellowship at your home!

Some cautionary words about sweet gum trees: Female trees produce large round seeds loaded with sharp spikes. Avoid planting near walkways, roofs, play areas. Sweet gum trees can grow rapidly to very large sizes, so be sure they have lots of room. Our forester member, Fred S., recently worked on an urban sweet gum 100 feet tall and 4 feet in diameter with a 75 foot crown width.

Thanks to all who have agreed to play a part in the festivities: Katie, Susan, Fred, Richard, Wenda, Roberta, Jessie.

NEWS FROM (UUFA PRESIDENT) SUUSAN

Hi Everyone!

Following our recent stewardship campaign, your UUFA Board is hard at work on a budget for our next church year. It will likely come as no surprise that our small, aging fellowship has been dealt a serious financial blow by the pandemic. There is no doubt that we will survive, but will we have the time, treasure, and talent to thrive? I think so; I hope so. Changes will be necessary, however, so watch this space for more details in the lead up to our Annual Meeting on April 24.
Imagine a clean slate:
If the UUFA didn’t already exist, and we were trying to start a brand-new, 21st century UU experience in Athens, what would it look like? We hope to have many opportunities for everyone to share their hopes and dreams for our shared future!
If you want to share your thoughts now, please reach out!

Peace, Suusan suusanw.uu@gmail.com ; 240-305-0860

NEWS FROM (UUFA PRESIDENT) SUUSAN

Hi Everyone!

Spring is around the corner! More of us are receiving the COVID vaccine. These are significant reasons for celebration! I’m sure we all have personal reasons for feeling gratitude during this season as well. Our Programming Committee may plan a “Parking Lot Service” soon, to allow us to gather safely together which we haven’t done in many many months. I miss you all, and seeing you in person again will be a treat!
Please remember to put Saturday, April 24, on your calendar for our Annual Meeting. We will meet by Zoom, beginning at 2:30.
Prior to the Annual Meeting, the Board will offer a “Budget Hearing” session to the entire congregation to share financial plans for the 2021-22 church year. More to follow soon on these meetings!

NEWS FROM (UUFA PRESIDENT) SUUSAN

Hi Everyone!

The UU Fellowship of Athens (that’s us!) is once again an Honor Congregation of the UUA (Unitarian Universalist Association, of which we are a member.)

What is an “Honor Congregation,” I hear you ask? This recognition means that we have paid our full Annual Program Fund amount for the 2020-2021 church year. This contribution gives us voting rights at the Annual General Assembly, allows us to tap into support services from UUA consultants, and a full suite of online resources. So when you make a pledge to the UUFA, this is part of what your pledge supports.

Thank you to all who have returned their pledge offerings for the current stewardship campaign. If you are considering a pledge or donation to the UUFA, feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.

NEWS FROM (UUFA PRESIDENT) SUUSAN

Hi Everyone!

March is just around the corner and I am starting to see more signs of spring–people posting pix of early flowers online, more sunlight and longer days, all the good things we look forward to through the darker months.

Spring at the UU Fellowship means we are preparing for our Annual Meeting on April 24. Please save the date and make plans to join us. As always we need a quorum of our members in order to conduct the Fellowship’s business, including voting on our budget for the new fiscal year that starts in July. If you are considering making a financial pledge to the Fellowship, please send that info to us as soon as possible so we can approach our budgeting exercise with as much input as possible. Thank you!

NEWS FROM (UUFA PRESIDENT) SUUSAN

Greetings from snowy southeast Ohio! I hope you and yours are staying safe and warm.

Despite the cold outside, the UU Fellowship continues to share the warmth and community of our UU values. One of those values is providing material support for the work we do together by offering our time, talent, and treasure to our collective efforts.

With all this in mind, UUFA has kicked off our Stewardship Campaign for the 2021-2022 church year. Members and some Friends (if we had a mailing address for you) have been sent a pledge form and a letter from the Stewardship Committee. However, I know there are many people who receive this newsletter who like the Fellowship and appreciate what we do, but are not formally affiliated with us.

We continue to welcome one and all to participate in whatever way you feel most comfortable with, and we know that many folks’ finances are tight in these challenging times, but if you have any ability to pitch a few bucks in the Fellowship’s direction, we are most grateful! Closing our doors for COVID has put a pinch on the Fellowship’s finances as well, and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Please contact me at president@uuathens.org for a paper copy of the pledge form, which is attached as a PDF far below. Donations can also be made by check mailed to UUFA, PO Box 333, Athens, OH 45701, or via Paypal or Tithe.ly

If you have questions or are interested in becoming a UUFA member, please shoot me a message!

Peace, Suusan suusanw.uu@gmail.com ; 240-305-0860

This Sunday: A Word From Don

“A Word from Don”
By Rev. Don Rollins
Sunday 11am EST by Zoom
February 14, 2021

The old saw applies: What a difference a year makes. A year ago we could take some things for granted that no longer apply, starting with something as fundamental to our wellbeing as human touch. Masks were for surgery units. Distancing was for avoiding the uncle that always ruins Thanksgiving dinner.

It’s far too early to take inventory of all we’ve lost since this time, last year. For some, a world fairly dominated by COVID has been a matter of inconvenience; but for the majority of our human family, it’s been a season of suffering, fear and loss.

In response, those of us lucky enough to have circles of care have relied even more on the online, masked, socially distanced embraces that help keep us from despair. Maybe it’s a group of friends. Maybe it’s family, maybe a grief or recovery group. Or maybe it’s a UU congregation.

The thing about UU congregations during COVID – even for those for whom being UUFA online just doesn’t cut it – is the comfort, even the joy of knowing the message of liberal religion remains despite it all. We still value, with all our hearts, the responsible quest for truth, the need for vital community, and peace with justice. That saving message hasn’t, and won’t change, no matter how long the wait to reclaim the sanctuary.

Meanwhile, UUFA’s annual stewardship campaign is ramping up. The good folks leading the campaign will soon be reaching out to you with the details, but let me quickly make the case for a larger vision. Put simply, UUFA is more than a local congregation: it’s a real-time, real-life outpost for these precious values. It’s a modern day incarnation of liberal religion, accountable not just to the local outpost, but the crazy-long denominational sign up on Longview Heights. That sign signals you and I are part of something bigger, flawed yet determined to make a difference in a hurting world.

As you discern what you’ll be giving in support of the 2021-22 campaign, I ask you to hold this larger vision in mind. Our offerings will indeed go to support the fellowship’s ministry, but also the larger, living tradition that reminds us we are not on our own.

Thanks in advance for giving what you can, to UUFA and beyond.
Blessings and stay safe,
Don

NEWS FROM (UUFA PRESIDENT) SUUSAN

Hey y’all! How ya doing? I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy.

I’m hearing that some of you are venturing out for your COVID vaccinations. This is wonderful news! It gives me hope that our reopening plans for the fall may actually come to pass.

The Executive Board is meeting on Saturday, Feb 13, to continue discussions of what our Fellowship might look like when we are able to gather together again. We are trying to reimagine ways in which our small-but-mighty congregation can continue to bring our liberal UU values to the larger Athens community, as well as to strengthen our bonds with one another.

If you have ideas to share, or would like to attend the Board meeting, please let me know!

Peace, Suusan suusanw.uu@gmail.com ; 240-305-0860

NEWS FROM (UUFA PRESIDENT) SUUSAN

Dear Ones,

I am almost at the point in the winter where I’ve had enough of the cold and the gray skies. How about you? But I’ve enjoyed the two recent moderate snowfalls we’ve had! What I like the most is the quiet that falls upon the land. No more traffic on my street; everything is hushed. The snow brings a sense of peace. Safely tucked in my warm home, I relax into the coziness of winter. Of course, I might feel differently if my work or other factors forced me out into the weather!

The Sunday Services of the UU Fellowship are part of the winter coziness too. Instead of venturing out on potentially slippery roads, I can share in our Sunday get-togethers from the comfort of my home! Lovely! The Board and Programming Committee are talking about how to continue our virtual services even after the Fellowship building reopens. We want to see you all whether online or (eventually) in real life!

While the last year has been challenging for churches all over the country, there were generational forces already contributing to declining participation in organized religion before the onset of the pandemic. We’ll explore some of those forces as well as ways congregations of all sizes can adapt to and survive the 21st century.

(suusanw.uu@gmail.com ; 240-305-0860)

On Saturday, the UUFA board met for many hours to talk about the current state of the Fellowship and what the future may hold for us post-pandemic. Our conversation was full of hope and honesty. COVID has been very challenging for all of us and our families, and for our community organizations, including the Fellowship. Some tough decisions may have to be made about our finances in the coming months, but I am confident that our leadership team will always keep the best interests of the UUFA congregation in mind as these decisions are made. THANK YOU to the Board: Katie E., Andy R., Jessie R., Roberta R., Brian R., Marilyn Z., and Richard T.
